Water filters

This article is about water filters for reticulated systems.

Why Filter ?

Filtering tap water is a good idea to further purify it. In addition to the chemicals added to the water, the water itself has likely travelled through kilometers of pipeline and may have picked up contaminants along the way. Water filters can filter out unwanted rust, chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, and bacterial components from tap water to benefit your family’s health. The type of water filter used depends on a variety of factors that the team at Seal Plumbing and Gas can assess and give advice on.

What are the options ?

There are a few water filter options with the top ones being:

  • Under-the-counter filters: These are great to have to keep out of sight and are plumbed in systems that connect to the cold-water line under the sink. These dispense filtered water through a second small faucet rather than the main faucet as well. Cartridges are cylinder shaped and are installed under the sink that do have to be replaced yearly.

  • Countertop filters: Use water pressure to force water through a filtration process which makes an effective method to filter water and takes up minimal space on the countertop.

  • Entire house system: This connects to the water line that supplies water to the house and separates bacteria, protozoa, lead, sediments, and asbestos in the cleaning process. Also, this system can increase the lifespan of household pipes by as much as 25% which aids in the effect of high water pressure on pipes, connections, fixtures, and appliances (NB. see our article on the risks of excessive water pressure). This option is for permanent use and must be installed by a licensed plumber and are excellent at filtering water. For an example of an entire house system and what’s in maintaining them see the video below.

  • Water pitchers: although these are portable and the initial investment is cheaper, the replacement of the filter would make it more costly over time. Also, these do not filter out as many contaminants as under-the-counter, countertop and entire house systems.
